Adult education classes continue through online platforms
The Council is continuing to deliver a programme of adult education provision at this time by utilising online technology and resources – and residents will soon be able to sign up for summer courses.
The ongoing public health emergency and social distancing guidelines have resulted in paid-for adult learning opportunities moving from face-to-face delivery to embracing new technology. All tutors are now producing new courses centred round online delivery, reflecting the current circumstances.
Examples of paid-for adult education moving online so far include IT classes being run across Skype video conferencing and educational technology platform Edmodo. Guitar and creative writing classes have utilised messenger and private group functions on Facebook, while sign-language classes have been held via Zoom video conferencing. Our free Essential Skills classes are also utilising messenger and group functions on Facebook.
Learners wishing to enrol on a new course can do so soon. A list of new courses for the upcoming summer term will be published here shortly. The new courses will also be added to the Garth Olwg Lifelong Learning website and Facebook page, with instructions on how to enrol.
The Garth Olwg Lifelong Learning Centre has also continued to promote a variety of new content and learning opportunities through its open-to-all social media accounts – which can be found at ‘Canolfan Garth Olwg Centre’ on Facebook and @GartholwgLLC on Twitter. These activities have ranged from well-being sessions to yoga classes and fun daily challenges.
Councillor Joy Rosser, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Inclusion Services, said: “Despite the challenges of the current circumstances brought by the Coronavirus outbreak, I’m pleased the Council is still able to deliver such a range of adult education courses – with these quality learning opportunities now embracing online technology.
“The courses for the upcoming summer term will be confirmed soon, and I’d urge any residents interested in enrolling – whether they are new learners or have enjoyed a course previously – to find out more on the website.”
