Aberdare Park Road Races
The Aberdare Park National Road Races return this weekend, once again attracting top riders from around the country as well as a record-breaking Isle of Man TT champion and a Welsh champion.
Thousands of spectators are expected to converge on Aberdare Park, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this month, for the two-day race meeting on Saturday and Sunday (July 20-21).
The Aberdare Park National Road Races are a highlight of the summer events calendar for motorcycle fans who flock to Rhondda Cynon Taf for a weekend of speed and excitement in picturesque surroundings.
Every year, the best riders from across the UK head to the County Borough to compete on the unique circuit around Aberdare Park.
The event “The annual Aberdare Park National Road Races are a fantastic two-day event, this year coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the official opening of Aberdare Park.
“Attracting thousands of spectators on both days, the annual event provides a great boost to local business and traders.
“Thanks to the amazing efforts of the Council and the Friends of Aberdare Park Group, Aberdare Park is looking fantastic this summer and is a blaze of colour due to the wonderful floral displays.
“Only last weekend hundreds of people enjoyed the 150th birthday celebrations at the park, marking a milestone in its history.
“Resurfacing work was also carried out around Aberdare Park in time for last year’s annual races, thanks to funding secured by the Motorcycle Club in partnership with Welsh Church Act Fund and the Council, and large sections of the track were re-laid as part of a £55,000 investment, which continues to benefit visitors to the park all year round.
“The Council is looking forward to welcoming the races this weekend, as Aberdare Park once again proves an excellent venue to host important local events.”
In recent years, the children’s play area at Aberdare Park has been refurbished and the ever-popular peddle boats have returned to the boating lake. The Victorian fountain, commemorating the Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary, has also been beautifully restored to its former glory.
The 2019 Aberdare Park National Road Races will include modern and classic races, with on-track action from 9am each day.
Riders to look out for include local boy and winner of the Welsh King of the Singles Championship, Jay Bellers-Smith; father and son racers Paul and Ryan Williams; family racing team Collins Racing; and British Hill Climb Champion Marty Robbins.
Isle of Man TT superstar Ian Lougher, who has won no less than 10 first places at the world-famous TT Races since 1990, will also be back at Aberdare Park this year meeting and greeting the public.
Visitors can choose to attend the Aberdare Park National Road Races on one day or make a weekend of it and camp on-site for the full ‘race’ experience.
