Tower End of an Era for Cynon Valley

Deep mining for coal in Wales ends on Friday when Tower Colliery closes.

A few records were broken in Tower

It took redundancy payouts of £8,000 each from 239 miner workers to fight off rival bids for the pit. On a January morning in 1995, they went back as owners, every one of them a shareholder in a new company.

The last coal mine in Wales owned by the miners

The biggest record of all for Tower was when our Member of Parliament Ann Clwyd broke her record for her longest stay in her constituency Cynon Valley a 27-hour sit-in it underground a record that she has never broken.

What should happen to the Tower now that the mine is to close?

Is there potential for tourism, any thoughts?

Just to put a few things

Just to put a few things straight. Not every employee was given the option to become a share holder. I finshed along with everyone else when closure came but due to a disagreement with certain leading figures I was not offered the chance even though other EX-employees were. Also Ann Clwyd actually went down the drift on the afternoon of the day that the pit was given the reprieve by the goverment, thus making her sit-in a total publicity exercise.
But I am glad that the boys had that many years work and good luck in thier new venture.

It will be sad to see the Tower Colliery closing it was always a land mark in the area ,it would be good to see it being turned into a tourist attraction as it is part of the heritage of the area and should not be lost forever like so many other old buildings and landmarks of the past.

Good luck to the men who kept it going for so many years, hope they all get good jobs to secure their futures.

Good to read that some of the miners from Tower are getting jobs in Aberpergym colliery .Feel sorry for the ones that will be out of work hope they all eventually find jobs ,it will be difficult for them as jobs in the area are scarce.

There is talk that the Tower site could be sold to developers for possibly housing , retail or leisure facilities .
