Listening to a group of teenagers in Aberdare town centre today....the theme of their conversation was that they were bored with life.
What did they suggest? A few of them said, and I quote, "Lets commit suicide".
Well I'm speachless, after the recent spate of suicides in Wales, you'd think it would be the last thing any teenager or younger person would want to inflict on their families and themselves.
Having said that, what have youngsters got to do around here?? What activities are open to them?? What options do they have to go further in life?? What insentives do they have to pull their socks up, when everyone is so down on them, and tbh failing them before they've set out in life!!
Growing up years ago, I can tell you now I was a free-er teenager/younger person, we never had gang problems, the fear of other "groups", a lack of things to do or places to go.
Today they have so many restriction from their parents to other adults, from other peer groups, from each other, from community groups, a lack of activities for them to get involved in, no huge range of clubs/interest groups for them to attend.
I think on a whole society along with our Government is failing everyone now a days, communities don't pull together and no one has the cash to set up groups to help these souls.
Most areas in Cardiff now have Youth Workers on the streets getting youngsters into clubs/sports/interest groups, mingling with them, steering them away from crime, drugs and ultimately a life of depression and dependency or life on the streets, hanging about doing nothing.
Where are our Youth Workers, helping Our Teens!!??
Welcome Cymru Doris
I agree that was not a polite welcome. Especially that you were stating fact and had just overheard the conversation.
Please post,
This forum is not a patch on what it used to be and the discussions need to reflect all sides of the community.
The more posters - good and bad the better in my opinion.
Eiragwyn doesn't seem to want to hear any of the nasty things in life. Maybe she lives in a cotton wool world where everything is sweetness and light and you never get hurt when you fall down.
She's obviously thinking about the spate of suicides in Bridgend, but that does not mean that we should not mention the "S" word on here, just because somebody might get the wrong end of the stick or might not want to know that such feelings of despair can affect people anywhere and at anytime.
Sure, it's not a pleasant subject, but get used to it, Eiragwyn, because it goes on, and it could happen here as well. Cymrudoris made a perfectly valid comment on an observation. If you find that disturbing then you're not alone because so do I, but I'm not afraid to hear somebody voicing it.
It's a wild world out there. To me it's a sad thing to hear as well, but not surprising.
missgemini
Welcome Cymrudoris - suicide is not a nice thing to talk about, and it is an awful thing, especially when it happens in your family. How I feel for all those families whose children committed suicide!! It happened in my family, so I know what I'm talking about!! My son had a reason to wanting to commit suicide - I don't think he was right. I think every day of what he left behind, and what us his parents and friends could have done to help him, and what we are suffering now.
Life is very difficult on times, harder for some than others, some can cope others can't!
My son had a degree, a good job, a young family, so it's not just the ones out of work, that contemplate it. There again, it's the ones that just talk about never do it!!
I think suicide is an awful thing but dying without having lived is worse so if people kill themselves but have had a good time then it isn't as bad as when people kill themselves and they've had a horrible time, in short it's probably the fault of the council.
Welcome Cymrudoris, Not a nice welcome at all, but one I'm coming to expect.
As I ddraenen states, "Eiragwyn doesn't seem to want to hear any of the nasty things in life. Maybe she lives in a cotton wool world where everything is sweetness and light and you never get hurt when you fall down."
The problem is its not just this poster but quite a few other that live in the world of "fluffy clouds".
What you have posted is something that reflects the modern era that we each live in, sad but true.
CymruDoris, Welcome to Aberdare Toe Theline. LOL!!.I would't be too upset over Gwyneira's freezing warm welcome, A.O.L. reminds me of Fawlty Towers
("I mentioned the war, but I think I got away with it!").You are quite entitled to your opinion on here as long as you get permission first.! LMAO!!
A.T.B Regards, Cymylog Jones.
DMJ - you are quite the comic! Why is Aberdareonline to blame
for people's comments on here? I think Lewis is very lenient with people's remarks. If you have such a low opinion of Aberdareonline, why do you visit and post?
I have always found this site very fair, and it has had its ups and downs over the years too, but after nearly what.. 15 years.. it's still thriving, so it must have a lot going for it.
It's a shame not more Aberdare people post on here...I think it's a fabulous site. The photos of Aberdare and surrounding towns look just lovely.
Thanks Lewis - keep up the good work. You must be in good shape
walking up all those mountains and hills?
Yes, well Toots, you are a classic example of what i was trying to point out, but obviously the humour and sentiment went over the top of your head. I thought that it was funny how people misinterperate what you write about, just like you have done, and Gwyneira did at the start. It reminded me of a Fawlty Towers farce, I was in no way critical of Lewis or Aberare/O.L,but laughing at the inability of some of the posters to comprehend. So please don't dive headlong in your haste to have a go at me, and not very subtly infer that i am surplus to requirements, instead, read the damned post a few times before forming an opinion.
DMJ:
Your quote "Yes, well Toots, you are a classic example of what i was trying to point out"..I'm bit confused - what were you trying to point out?
"Aberdare Toe-theline" .. AOL reminds me of Fawlty Towers..

Please explain then what you meant by those remarks?
Idont think we should take the subject of suicide as a joke.aberdare online might be like Faulty Towers on times but that is part of the enjoyment of being on here, i like it anyway good or bad posts .Perhaps i am sitting on the fence.
of course suicide is not to be joked at, i was pointing out that it was laughable that a forum member could tell another one what to write about and if he didn't like it than don't post hence "toeing the Aberdare line"
I haven’t had time to post lately for reasons of my own, rain and otherwise. I wasn’t going to post again, with the snide remarks that have been put on here lately, but I must say this before I leave.
Eiragwyn was wrong to state what she did, I agree, and I’m sure she regrets saying it. I’m sure an apology would be in order to the person concerned.
She is not a criminal, but probably feels like one now.

Onevoice and Y ddraenen It shows you only read the posts you want to read, If you had taken the time to read her earlier posts.
If she is to proud to say it, I’ll say it for her they lost a daughter through Muscular Dystrophy. I don’t think you can tell her or anyone else about living on a fluffy cloud, and afraid of getting hurt. you want to remove those halo’s off your heads and read how the other half live.
Haven’t you got the guts to name the others who live on a fluffy cloud
She did say please. if you read it rightly, although that wasn’t mentioned at all on here.
If you want to know, have I seen heartbreak, yes more in one day than I hope you will never see in your life time, and the anniversary is next month and personal tragedies so before you preach again look home.
Maybe there should have been a separate forum for humour, for those with a sense of it, it’s certainly lacking on here at the moment.
If you wish to ask to have this post removed go ahead I won’t object, you must be one of Gods chosen few.
I’m surprised at your remarks D just who are you referring to with that Fawlty Towers remark and can’t comprehend if the army remark was aimed at me just say it, or are you hiding behind double meaning words again.
Its no wonder the site is lacking in posters with remarks like those.
If you wish to have a go at me go ahead, but don’t forget I can fire a broad side as well.
This was sent to me recently and the meaning is very true.

The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The holy man said, 'I don't understand.'
It is simple,' said the Lord. 'It requires but one skill. You see, they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves.'

How is what I posted any worse than this?
"Onevoice and Y ddraenen It shows you only read the posts you want to read, If you had taken the time to read her earlier posts"
I can assure you I read all posts but only reply to the ones that have any interest for me.
"Haven’t you got the guts to name the others who live on a fluffy cloud"
I have said on a number of threads that people who don't like what they see should avoid the serious threads and look to the fun threads.
I you look back through the post you will see I direct it TO the person, I don't know if that qualifies as "having the guts".
"If you wish to ask to have this post removed go ahead I won’t object."
I see no reason to request this post to be removed, I have been posting on AberdareOnline for many years and in that time I have only asked for one post to be removed.
The post was offensive and racist and the administration must have felt the same way as it was removed.
"If you wish to have a go at me go ahead, but don’t forget I can fire a broad side as well."
Are you trying to turn this thread into a war of words?
I believe that there is room on a forum for ALL posters, some threads cover subjects that are "not nice", If you as poster cannot handle this then there are other threads that deal with the jokes/funnies or whatever turns you on.
The onus is on to you, If you would like to fire a broadside feel free to take your best shot.
Off course i will apologize if needs be but they were my thoughts at the time
September 6 th which incidentally was my birthday .Could it have been the wine
I have always felt free to speak my mind have stood up all my life against injustice never slow to speak. Having lived way over my alloted span of life i can assure everyone that I do not live on a fluffy white cloud and now full well there are many pitfalls in life .
I enjoy being part of Aoland have supported many causes and get on with most people. Have been to Greenpeace and visited Greenham Common all this seems along time ago.

Lets all go back to where we were.Come on Beacon Girl where is the next game

If I have offended anyone with my posting. If I haven,t welcomed anyone I am sorry
Please dont leave us Nonrev3. i have enjoyed reading your posts, i somtimes live in a world of my own it must be my age . i think Eiragwn was treated badly i dont think she should apologize for what she wrote she has a right to her opinion.please keep posting both of you .
Oh Dear another hiccup ,I have lost count of how many of these we have had over the years.
For me its least said soonest mended,we usually all get over it and move on to new discussions.
Everyone, has a right to their opinion, and if you voice your opinion then surely it's not wrong for those who don't agree to voice theirs as well.I cannot help thinking that if certain people, and i include myself amongst them, had written as terse a repy to a newbie, then all hell would have broken loose
Nonrev,I respect you and your right to your opinions, but your remarks are out of order, if i had anything to say to you it would be straight.
Thank You D, and I respect your view, but reading that post, there was two meanings, who are the other classic examples beside toots
that's all I wanted to know, who are you referring to. if that is out of order correct me.
Please can we forgive and forget. Turn the other cheek or whatever.
I don,t really remember being welcomed to AOL.the first time I posted but have always enjoyed posting This subject seems to have had more replies apart from our games
We are all different like different things and have varied points of view .I have said sorry what is the next penance.
Anyway its a lovely day the mountains and sky are so beautiful I have painted a back wall and am now working on a story of my family. Our chapel was demolished and the remains in the graveyard are now in a small memorial garden on the same site This project has taken so long. My Great Granfather who died of Cholera was buried there in 1866. 4 young children who died in infancy are there followed by their mother much later. We are holding an out door service there on Friday. It is Libanus in Treherbert.
If anyway is interesred I have access to census records and would look anything up for you. Could this be my penance (No it would be enjoyment)
Non rev please stay. I will hold a silence for you on the anniversary of the event you mentioned
Lets hope Friday stays nice for your outdoor service and all goes well, i am glad we are putting the last few posts aside and we can get on together in love and peace , shake hands and forget the unkind remarks that were made. Please come back on here Nonrev you would be missed if you find you can not return. all the best to everybody on here.
Nonrevv i didn't say there were more or others on here, i said that toots was a classic example of how some people read entirely the wrong meaning into the written word, nothing like what was intended. Now i am drawing a line under this subject. As Beacon Girl wisely stated , least said soonest mended, and that should apply to us all
I have many many diseases but the worst disease you can have is ignorance. Lots of people seem to be testing positive for ignorance on these boards and there isn't a Doctor in Aberdare who knows how to cure it.
I did try to reply yesterday but for some reason I could get no further than the preview, it’s probably this computer which I’m no wizard at.
I’m sure you are all great people at heart and with good intensions, keep talking to each other, If I seemed abrupt I’m not, only when something seems wrong. and try to right it.
I'll drop the sunject by all means, I may be ignorant with words, but try not to be with people. If I offended you I apologise.
I shall have to leave here for awhile The old eyes are not what they used to be.
I have to rest them, they wont operate until the other problem I have is cleared up. keep on talking I'll be back as soon as I can.
take offence to something said to your face by a real person standing in front of you.
Take with a pinch of salt ANYTHING said on an internet forum as the person who said it has the benefit of anonymity and is safe in the knowledge that there will be a complete lack of physical retaliation.
If your taking internet forums too seriously, then you spend far to much time on the internet (and i'm talking with 10 years hardcore competitive online gaming experience behind me, and i've done the whole "taking the internet to seriously" thing)
Real life is far more offensive than a size 10 Tahoma font on your monitor.

AMERICAN iNDIAN PRAYER
Grant that I may not criticise my neighbour until I have walked a mile in his moccasins

I don't think there is
I don't think there is need to apologise Eiragwyn as I think your first posting was taken the wrong way by so many other posters.
They criticised you for posting your feelings while at the same time saying that everyone is entitled to post theirs, A bit contradictory I thought.
I could understand where you were coming from with your initial posting and I was supprised to see so many others taking offence with it.
Keep posting dear, Opinions are called for on here and you are entitled to yours as well as anyone else.
Have a nice day.
Cymro.
Oh Dear another hiccup ,I
Oh Dear another hiccup ,I have lost count of how many of these we have had over the years.
For me its least said soonest mended,we usually all get over it and move on to new discussions.
Just hope everyone will keep posting.
Everyone, has a right to
Everyone, has a right to their opinion, and if you voice your opinion then surely it's not wrong for those who don't agree to voice theirs as well.I cannot help thinking that if certain people, and i include myself amongst them, had written as terse a repy to a newbie, then all hell would have broken loose
Nonrev,I respect you and your right to your opinions, but your remarks are out of order, if i had anything to say to you it would be straight.
Thank You D, and I respect
Thank You D, and I respect your view, but reading that post, there was two meanings, who are the other classic examples beside toots
that's all I wanted to know, who are you referring to. if that is out of order correct me.
Please can we forgive and
Please can we forgive and forget.
Lets hope Friday stays nice
Lets hope Friday stays nice for your outdoor service and all goes well, i am glad we are putting the last few posts aside and we can get on together in love and peace , shake hands and forget the unkind remarks that were made. Please come back on here Nonrev you would be missed if you find you can not return. all the best to everybody on here.
Nonrevv i didn't say there
Nonrevv i didn't say there were more or others on here, i said that toots was a classic example of how some people read entirely the wrong meaning into the written word, nothing like what was intended. Now i am drawing a line under this subject. As Beacon Girl wisely stated , least said soonest mended, and that should apply to us all
I have many many diseases
I have many many diseases but the worst disease you can have is ignorance. Lots of people seem to be testing positive for ignorance on these boards and there isn't a Doctor in Aberdare who knows how to cure it.
I did try to reply yesterday
Some people need to clam
Some people need to clam down and learn the first rule of the internet:
http://sc.tri-bit.com/John_Gabriel's_Greater_Internet_Fuckwad_Theory
take offence to something said to your face by a real person standing in front of you.
Leon.
