Michael Foot was called a man of principles. In today's political climate, and especially amongst the party that he belonged to, that is a rarity indeed. Most of them would have to look up the meaning of the word principle in a dictionary anyway, and even if it were spelled out for them in words of just one syllable, I doubt whether they'd get it.
They certainly don't get it here in RCT. Principles? Self serving, riders on a gravy train more like it. Born again Marxists all of them, only it ain't Karl Marx this time, but Groucho Marx: "Those are my principles; if you don't like 'em I got others."
Sounds about right to me. Men like Michael Foot are a breed that won't be seen for many a long year in the present climate. I didn't even agree with some of his principles, but I admired his intellectual stature, his integrity and his honesty. I only wish I could say that about the specimens we've got here in RCT and the Labour Party in general.

MICHAEL FOOT was unique,he rated as the only Beatnick intelectual to ever lead any party. This, I think, was at a time when people were not so concerned about what you wore, but HOW you wore, your principles ,promises and actions . His undying adherence to democracy and all that it entails could stand some of todays well dressed MP pierot's in good stead. The man was an icon, not to Carnaby Street, but to good old fashioned Socialist principles. His duffle coat was a statement which read don't judge me on my sense of dress, but on my actions and sense of common decency.
R.I.P Michael Foot , YOU WILL BE SORELY MISSED!
