Constructed by the Powell Duffryn Company the electric generating station was built to serve and power the Aberdare group of collieries replacing the steam and air driven motors with electric motors. In 1920 surplus electricity generated was sold off to the local authority Aberdare Urban district Council, the generating station supplied power until the 1960s
