Is anyone on here anymore from the ones that used to have fun on here I check in every so often but I don't see anything to contribute too what happened to the ones who used to be here like BG and Moonraker and Mystery Lady, I guess they felt the same as I do no more games or playing games like songs beginning with A-Z or places in Wales oh well serious things now that can be heard on the news and its disheartening to think this was once a great place to come to and enjoy

Hi, I feel the same. I read

Hi, I feel the same. I read the discussion but rarely log in because whatever is posted is now turned into a political arguement.Even though part of this site holds a political forum. We used to have some good discussions on local events and I loved the quizzes, but as for bnp and other party arguments well out of my league I guess, I did try a posting with a "up a small word with a big meaning" hoping someone would join in. It was just something I had in an email quiz and thought it would take over from politics but no-one answered.

If you can start a quiz on any subject it would be great I'm sure there are a lot of us out here that would join

I feel the same too :-( OK

Thanks for starting this

Thanks for starting this topic, it is soooo nice to be back again happily with a quiz to start but I am sure as time goes on topics without political overtones will arise as a number of the old Aberdare have contributed to this. so thanks again for the start up, GG347

Hi Welshgirl What a night

Hi Welshgirl
What a night that was at the Con Club must be at least 5 years ago now ,do you still have the photos you took that night.LOL Still have not seen them.
Where Exactly is Yuma ,do your sons live in that area ?

Hi Gardengirl
Well something on here is better than nothing ,just hope it will pick up again soon. Maybe its the time of year , good weather so people are out and about or gardening or on holiday .
I look in on several other sites and they all seem to be pretty dead at the moment.

My Films.
Ben Hur.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

I agree with Welshgirl that

I agree with Welshgirl that this site became a political forum in total and that is why many others i know don't drop in anymore. Hope it becomes a little more light hearted without all the racist posts and slanging of the local council. Your right, there is another area on here for that.

My contribution is Georgy Girl

By the way, I made a trip to Barry Island this year, first time for over 30 years. I expected to see the Scenic railway etc but had a job to find where the fair was. It appears to be now just a tiny area with a few kiddies rides. We used to have such fun on the big fair. Anyone remember those good old days in Barry??

glad to see we are back my

glad to see we are back my film ----

Anne of the Indies.

Picked up the paper and noticed it was on ths morning

Barry Island It certainly is not the Barry Island we kne. Such a place the rules were no fair until late afternoon .

Day trips to Barry those

Day trips to Barry those were the highlights of our year ,travel by coach or train very few people had car back in my youth.
Do you remember the big shelters for all the coaches to park in,they vanished when Butlins was built on the site that has now gone and been replaced with houses.
While there we usually had a walk to see the old Steam locomotives that were somewhere round by the docks I think.
Visited there a few years ago and it is not the same at all ,think the Scenic Railway got blow down in a storm long ago.

My Film.

Educating Rita.

No BG i lost them pics when

No BG i lost them pics when my computer crashed I wish I had them thoughlol. I remember our bus trips to Barry Island and when we could see the sea everyone on the bus started singing for he's a jolly good driver or fellow one of the two lol. Then some time during the day you wold hear from the lost children place a kids name being announced . I wonder sometimes why my mum never just dropped me of thereI must have been her worse nightmare taking off into the sea when I felt like. Now I lost my train of thought for a movie name lol

btw great too see you

Welsh Girl - When are you

Welsh Girl - When are you going to Yuma next? We usually go in Nov for 3 mo - perhaps we can meet up, finally. Where do you stay - we take a trailer for one mo in Yuma, then move around.
I like the idea of buying there too, but who will look after the home in the summer? - it's too darn hot there then.
Prices are good tho!

Perhpas it might be an idea

Perhpas it might be an idea to rename the current "Local Government" sub forum to "Politics & Local Government", and have the forum admins actually do their job and move political threads to that forum so as to not clog up the general discussion forum with political crap???

Talking of the shelters in

Talking of the shelters in Barry. The ones down by the beach used to have the penny slot machines where you could watch wooden puppets moving around and an old fireman climbing up a ladder to a house. Those machines must be worth a fortune today. The threat of being taken up and left in the Lost Children's area was always a threat if we tried playing up for money. What about sandwiches on the beach always full of sand Urggggggggggh

I also remember racing up just before the stroke of each hour to watch the funny Guiness Clock working-that always drew a crowd-anyone remember that??

Forgot to add a film title-

Forgot to add a film title- Bridget Jones's Diary

Hi how many seniors on here,

Hi how many seniors on here, that can remember having a whole FIVE SHILLINGS to last the day in Barry, and that would be a works social outing. When an excurtion went from the train station and our parents took us half a crown would be the limit for the fair. mmm sandy sarnies and fish and chips to come home. Wonderful!! I can never remember rain though, unless my old mind block those days lol

My film
Jesus Christ Superstar
Mary Poppins
Greyfriers Bobby

FIVE SHILLINGS for the

FIVE SHILLINGS for the day,you were lucky.
Back in the early 50's I was lucky to get half a crown for a whole week.
I remember when I was 16 and got my first job I earned £3 a week ,I thought I was really rich then .

My Films
Alfie.
Lawrence of Arabia.

I did a newspaper round

I did a newspaper round which took nearly an hour to do. Up at 6-30 and finished by 8 ready for school and also a Saturday. All for the grand sum of a £1 a week.

I don't ever remember being given any money to last the day in barry as it would have all gone in the first hour. Remember always offering to take the deck chairs back to get the deposit so I would have some money for the fair and a hot dog. The works trips were nearly always by train then, and the platform would be heaving with families with all the food bags and buckets and spades etc then the chaos on Barry Island station making sure you got on the right train home. Lovely memories

My film is David Copperfield

Street outing were around

Street outing were around too, some one would organize a bus Either on an Easter or August bank holiday,we always sang on those bus trips on the way there and home, Our buckets were kept for bus sickness(no polythene carrier bags then)and sure as hek there would be an arguement who was taking the front seat lol and the teenagers always sat at the back.

Also the Chapels had outings (not to Barry though) I cant remember our church sunday school doing this though

Train for me was either an excursion which would be advertized on a bill board outside the little halt in our village where my father past when walking home from work, us kids also saw them and prayed there would be no overtime for my father that weekend (he would not miss a shift)

It amazes now to think men worked long hours, came home, dug and tended a garden to suply the veg. cut firewood for a week and still had the energy to play with us kids and organise outings. I supose todays men do the same but with labour saving devices and the kids into computors it must be easier. Not forgetting the women who worked hard at the home, but I think men made the decisions, even though the women plotted FIRST them and let them think it was thier desision lol

My films

Tarzan (dont think he had another name lol)

Anna and the king

The James Dean story

Can anyone tell me a name of a pub in Monk Street (Foundry Town) as I have been wracking my brains I know the Bird in Hand but cant think of the other one.

I had to go there once to collect my boyfriend of the time, and there was an elderly Irish guy there singing The Old Colonial Boy, I stayed to listen (and I was pop music crazy then) It really swayed me into folk music.
It was the only time I went there so I cant remeber the name but the memory of the one night and one song stays.

the other pub in foundry

the other pub in foundry town was the morning star.

I can remember a pub at the

I can remember a pub at the lower end of Miskin, but the dementia has set in and taken it's name. The speciality act was a fella who could sing the whole of "Danny Boy" with a tobacco tin, longways, in his mouth. As an encore he would give a rendition of the album version of "The Rose of Trallee" this time with thirteen dominoes in his mouth. When he took a breath his shoulders would go up to his ears. The favourite sport was football in the bar, with a pint pot as the ball, and no rules.
Dementia's gone, it was the Park Hotel.
Apollo will recall that they sold a special brew called "Exhibition Cider", so named because after a pint and a half you made an exhibition of yourself.I seem to remember that he only made it as far as 'Ceiber clock.

Name of a film = Godzilla,(my Mother-in-Law played the lead part in it).

Those were the days. The

Those were the days. The Park Hotel!! It was part of making Britain great because the Exhibition Cider was also used to fuel the Apollo 11 rocket mission 40 years ago.

It was also declared a new medical innovation against the common cough. Three pints and you were afraid to cough! especially racing down past the Ceiber clock to the nearest conveniences.

Eventually it was analysed and found to have the same constituents as embalming fluid, so the landlord regrettably had to inform Dick Hughes the undertaker that he couldn't buy it from him anymore.

On a Friday night,

On a Friday night, bystanders would gather outside the Park Hotel to witness the Cider drinkers leaving down Ceiber Road and would follow at a safe distance. As the cider worked through the system, so the pace would pick and by Shuman's sweet shop they would be walking at double time setting a buttock-clenching pace. This would increase to a slow run by the time they reached Baker's the Ironmongers and with the knowledge there was only one cubicle in the conveniences at Ceiber Clock, by the time they had reached the British Legion there would be a final 100 yards dash by both drinkers and spectators. And that is really how the idea for the Nos Galan Races first started !!!!!!

Another great for Britain
