Pupils at a Glyncoch school are throwing their support behind the successful campaign to create the UK’s first zero-waste village.
Children from Craig yr Hesg School joined forces with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Streetcare Team and the Environment Agency Wales to arrange a litter-picking exercise throughout their community.
The youngsters filled seven large bags of litter which was discovered on the pavements and public land throughout the village.
The initiative is the latest chapter in the Green Glyncoch environmental project launched by the Council to transform Glyncoch by ensuring all residents respect their environment, all communal areas and open spaces are well maintained and whilst there is no litter on the ground, there is no fly tipping in the village and all dog owners are signed up to the good owners guide.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Frontline Services Cllr Anthony Christopher said: “Already we are beginning to see the gradual transformation of the village. The general cleanliness of the area is improving and residents themselves are beginning to take ownership of the project which can only be a good thing in the long-term sustainability of the scheme.
“Thanks to the support of the schoolchildren – who in turn can help influence adults at home – the latest litter-picking exercise will help us reach our goal of creating a zero waste village.
“Our work is only just beginning in Glyncoch but we are increasingly hopeful that with the continued support of residents and our partner agencies, we will succeed.”
