Wales's woodland canopies are set to become tree top adventure playgrounds where thrill-seekers can get a "Tarzan's eye" view of the forest below.
Forestry Commission Wales has signed a multi-site agreement with the company Go Ape to build at least four high wire experiences across Wales which will bring a whole new perspective to the Welsh Assembly's woodlands.
The first treetop obstacle course to be built in Assembly woodlands opens later this month in Coed-y-Brenin Forest Park, which is already renowned for its many mountain bike and walking trails on the forest floor.
Now the public's views are being sought on plans for Go Ape to construct another course consisting of wire ropes, platforms and a variety of obstacles in Moel Famau, near Mold in north Wales, with others to follow in Cwmcarn near Caerphilly, and Garwnant near Merthyr Tydfil, subject to planning permission being granted.
Go Ape hopes to build the four courses, which cost about £300,000 each, in FC Wales-managed woodlands by 31 December 2013 and, if successful, will have first refusal for rights on any other site until 2020.
Go Ape is a giant obstacle course that’s set high up in the treetops. Would-be gorillas and baboons alike get to spend approximately three hours monkeying around high up in the canopy, some 40 feet above the forest floor.
Go Ape instructors kit users out with harnesses, pulleys and carabiners and give them a safety briefing before they are let loose into the forest canopy. The course is split into five separate sections and each section is made up of obstacles such as ladders, walkways, bridges and tunnels.
FC Wales Area Land Agent Mari Sibley said, "Go Ape’s courses in our forests will give visitors even more opportunity to have fun, be active and enjoy some adrenaline thrills while benefiting from our wonderful woodland environments.
"Our woodlands provide a rich resource for recreation, health and well-being activities for everyone and we are very excited about our new partnership with Go Ape."
There is already a Go Ape course on council-owned land at Margam Country Park in Neath and another is due to open in Pembrey Country Park in Carmarthen in March.
