Community Day Tackles Climate Change

A community united in an effort to tackle the effects of climate change and raise awareness of this serious global issue.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Sustainable Development Team joined forces in a multi-partnership event at Fernhill and Glenboi Community Centre in a Community Climate Change Day to educate individuals on how they can play their part in reducing their carbon footprint.

The event was organised by Fernhill and Glenboi Communities First and international volunteers Sam Zziwa and Teresa Griggio who are involved in Partners in Progress, a project co-ordinated by the Council’s Sustainable Development Team which highlights global sustainability issues to the communities of the county borough.

One of the agencies involved in the project was PONT, whose members demonstrated how people in Uganda are already feeling the impacts of climate change through erratic and unpredictable rainfall that affects food production and heavy flooding that causes an increase in disease.

Some of the activities being held throughout the day included a Climate Change five-a-side football tournament for 13-16 year-olds which welcomed over 16 teams from communities throughout the Cynon Valley.

There was also an exhibition, stalls, games and workshops for all ages inside the centre. This included an all day drumming workshop which attracted children and adults alike. The drums were used in a march against Climate Change which took place around Fernhill.

Residents came out of their houses to watch the procession as marchers held banners encouraging people to live a greener lifestyle by reducing their energy use, using the car less and buying locally produced food.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Frontline Services Cllr Anthony Christopher explained: “The Climate Change event certainly raised awareness of an incredibly important issue and I hope in some way educated more and more people of the effect each and every one of us has on our environment.

“Congratulations to everyone involved in the event which I know was an outstanding success and I hope many more similar activities will take place throughout the county borough to continually send this message out to all residents and visitors to Rhondda Cynon Taf.”
