Does anyone remember the floods we had just after Christmas of 1979? or would it have been 1980? I have been thinking recently of some of the things that the valley has gone through in the last century (no I'm not that old) but I love this valley, and from being "Cynon Valley" and going on to "Rhondda, Cynon, Taff" I feel that we have "lost" something of our name\identity. I am now married to an Englishman ( nothing's perfect) and in reminiscing, I thought of the floods that happened just after Christmas on either 1979 or 1980. I have tried a "Google" search on the net for photos, but, so far, have come up with nothing! I wondered if anyone captured the event, and would be able to upload them, for public viewing, with any memories of that time? Thanks in anticipation.

Can't help you with photographs but it was Boxing Day, 1980. I was on duty at Aberdare Fire Station. Our first shout was to flooding in Robertstown, we were there for several hours. However, the situation became serious and we were told to abandon working in Robertstown as the flooding worstened and people had to be evacuated.
We were then tasked to Plasdraw to rescue a woman trapped in the rising floodwater. The fire station itself became flooded, my car was flooded and the force of the water demolished a wall between the station and the girls' hockey field.
Our last job of the day was to rescue a man stuck on what had become an island at Aberaman. It was the only time in my career that the Chief Fire Officer called in all off duty firefighters.
What I do remember well was the generosity of the owners of the Gadlys Arms in feeding both the firefighters and residents of Robertstown.
