Cynon Valley Poetry

The following poem was sent to us by Donna Marie Jones of Aberdare. The poem protrays how she views the valley in the year 2005 as I'm sure many of us do.

Cynon Valley
by Donna Marie Jones

Sitting high on a mountain
And looking about,
I see a view of a valley
The nicest, no doubt.

There’s a coal mine in Hirwaun
Last deep one in Wales,
Coal is still carried
Along valley rails.

There’s plenty of landmarks
To distinguish this town,
But one thing is missing
Gadlys clock’s been knocked down.

The cathedral of the valley
Stands out above all,
St Elvan’s church steeple
A hundred and eighty feet tall.

After enjoying the best bits
And looking below,
I see the town centres
Got a long way to go.

Most of the shops, they have closed
The town’s looking bad,
Only memories we hold
Of the town we once had.

But when I look at the mountains
I forget all the mess,
And I have realised this valley’s,
By far the best.
