Aberdare Chess ClubAberdare Chess Club was formed over twenty years ago, and plays in the East Glamorgan Leagues and Welsh Cup competitions. Home matches are on Wednesdays at Aberdare Rugby Club. For details and directions see below and http://www.aberdarerfc.co.uk
Drawing match was not enough 10 October 2007 Aberdare held three draws against last years East Glamorgan League Champions but it was not enough against a side, who strongly out graded the hosts Nevertheless it shows that Aberdare can still walk with the big boys Aberdare Wasps v Cardiff Castles Richard Miles 0 v 1 J.Trevelyan David Llewellyn draw A.Spice Philip French draw K.Thompson Steve Woodrow 0 v 1 J.Fathallah Mike Woodrow draw G.Wagner DL No Pizza for the Star Wars invaders 3 October 2007 The young Jedi arrived from a far away galaxy; lightsabres rattling, looking to earn the 14inch pizza that a successful result promised. The youngsters employed questionable tactics, stealing Aberdare players’ beer and hiding Simon’s cigarettes at every opportunity. This didn’t go down well so, operation Revenge of the Sith, was activated. Steve ‘ Darth Vader’ Woodrow, terminated his opponent early on, Jabba Richardson close on his heals exterminating a noisy Princess Leia. Yoda Woodrow gave respect to his opponents play – but result was same. R2-D2 Thomas, beeped & sang his lad to submission, whilst Chewbacca Parker growled loudly but his frightened opponent hung on bravely. They were however a player short, allowing Jeff T an early bath; so no time-pressure involved with this win. We out-graded our opponents on all remaining boards, but things didn’t go to plan. Huw made an early advantage count and his point looked inevitable, whilst Steve’s cavalier style won 2 pieces and, eventually a resignation. However, Simons awful opening saw him on the back foot but well ahead on time. His strategy of forcing complicated positions & longer thinking time nearly paid off but opponent made his 35 moves with 30 secs to spare and 2 pawns up – first loss of evening. Graham looked comfortable but a miscalculation in pawn & king endgame saw a breach of defences and a lost position. So a 3-2 win was recorded and Mike Kearns reported that as Aberdare’s 9th straight match win… even the workmen, carrying out running repairs to the Rugby Club dance-floor, were impressed. G Parker 0-1 H.Deere J Thomas 1-0 Default Return of a Friend 10 January 2007 Huw Oliver a former board one for Aberdare returned to active local play with a home match against Penarth Although living away Huw’s appearance has further enhanced the Club’s available players having been previously forced to field one team due to limited numbers Although this leaves Mike Woodrow a “Captain’s headache” as to ensuring all players have an opportunity to play under the rota system it is a nice headache! !! At last the Final 30 August 2006 Aberdare welcomed Caerphilly as the other finalised of the East Glamorgan Summer Cup at the Aberdare Rugby Club Caerphilly who were in the hunt for the Division One title last season proved too strong for the home side with a sound victory However it was no white wash with Steve Woodrow obtaining a deserving draw

Chairman’s - website report Aug 2006 I have delayed publishing my end of season report due to the clubs outstanding progress in the East Glam Summer Cup which is worthy of inclusion. We progressed to the Final, overcoming many excellent teams on the way and, last night, faced Caerphilly kings. Though ‘outgraded’ by an average of 300 points on each board, everyone put up a strong performance. We ultimately lost 3.5 points to 0.5; congratulations to Steve on taking Mr John Thornton and graciously offering a draw when Johns clock was about to fall. Last season Overall: The season was very pleasing. We hit our main aim of keeping all players active and giving everyone a game on a rotation basis. Very pleased that we didn’t default on any boards; too many unavoidable instances in 04-05 was embarrassing. Also the team was fairly close to promotion ending in 4th place, only 5.5 points off 3rd spot. Membership: Membership levels stayed constant; thanks to everyone for pulling together and sitting out matches occasionally. I feel the spread of games was very equitable; we did talk about each member getting 13 games and we all exceeded that. We all got our hopes up with Dave Hill returning but alas it was short lived and only for 1 game. Also pleasing to see so many consistent performances, with Philip & Mike scoring particularly high averages in the League and Simon’s unbeaten cup runs raised his average. Factual: Our only team ‘the wasps’ finished 4th in Div 2 with 49.5 points · Cups: o We reached the Semi-final stage of the WCU Open Plate o Our U1800 team reached the Semi-final stage of this cup again losing to Malpas o Much entertainment was created during these fixtures mainly due to the running battle between Simon and the controller, Glyn, on rule interpretations o Summer Cup – losing Finalists. The seasons best development was creation of our Web pages and match reports; many thanks to David for setting up and maintaining them; and re-setting them up when he deleted all contents. Looking Forward: I had hoped we’d have picked p a couple of new/returning members by now and we could plan for 2 teams. But this has proved a bit optimistic and I propose we stick with one; aim for another year of consolidation and equitable rotation of players; promotion again, wont be far away. Some sunshine on the horizon with David’s links with Tom from Club Chairman
Cups, Cups my Kingdom for a Cup 5 May 2006 The Summer months are often the times where Cup games take on a life of their own as league commitments have ended with Aberdare no exception So let the battle begin DL Aberdare Wasps player in Top 5 1 May 2006

Sadly, the early strong results have not been a consistent feature, and with a small number of members and limited availability of Dave Hill, there has been too many points dropped, whereby fourth appears a justifiable position.Nevertheless, with three teams for promotion, Chairman Simon Richardson feels fourth place is a good spring board “for promotion push”, particularly since the margin between the promotion rivals is so small, Simon also remains hopeful of some success in the Welsh Chess Union Team Knock Out, with two Teams still in competition. However, at the end of the day four may in fact be a lucky Club number, as Phillip French is the fourth best league performance with 81%!! 2006 awaits... (DL)Penarth Go Home With The Points, But Wet – 7 December 2005The Wasps played a highly graded Penarth team last week, but, on an eventful evening, succumbed to their opponents. Dave Hill, a key player, pulled out due to work commitments and the team looked weaker for this loss. The Penarth captain forgot her protocol when arranging her board order, after exchanging cards, but the changes paid off, with Simon & Graham suffering slow defeats, whilst Jeff took far too long over his moves, and denied himself any chance of a result in doing so.Philip continued his excellent season, winning in another record time, and Dave Llewellyn pushed his opponent all the way, before blundering under pressure at the death. However, the pub dog had the last laugh, getting slightly too excited, resulting in an offer of a dry cleaning bill to the Penarth captain. (SR)Bridgend For The Second Time In 2 Weeks – 28 November 2005The Wasps welcomed back David Hill for his first game of the season. Being the strongest player in the club, although a little ring rusty, a trip to Bridgend’s second side wasn’t envisaged to cause him a massive challenge…. However, no one told Bridgend, who fielded their highest graded player in opposition.David played solidly throughout and gained a creditable draw, a great omen for the rest of the season.Llewellyn and French outplayed their opponents, whilst Steve and Simon were put under pressure on the bottom boards; Steve fighting back to gain the draw, whilst Simon’s rash sacrifices quickened his defeat. A good result 3 to 2 keeps the Wasps in the top 3.
