Cynon Valley Museum

The Cynon valley museum, Depot Road, Aberdare

The Cynon Valley Museum consists of a main museum gallery, a temporary exhibition gallery and an Art Gallery. The main gallery focuses on the social history of the Cynon Valley from 1800 to the present.There are audio visual presentations in the gallery including films on the Iron Industry around 1830 and the Miners Strike of 1984 / 85. Amongst the displays are cases looking at issues such as sport, health, religion, popular culture, costume, war and home front and the post war years.

There are also multimedia units throughout the gallery which trace the lives of a family through two hundred years. There is also a reconstructed valleys shop which will be used as a basis of education visits.

The temporary exhibition gallery will house displays based on the museums collections and will cover over the coming years topics such as women's work, religion, crime and punishment.

The Art Gallery has a programme of contemporary art and design bringing works and exhibitions from all over the world to the valley.

The museum has a shop selling craft and books as well as a café and full toilet and lift facilities.

Museum opening times

Monday - Saturday 10am - 4.30pm
and is situated opposite Tesco in Aberdare
