Welsh title fights, Boyo ReesWelsh Title Fights By John Penri Hillman, Abercwmboi On the 29th October 1934 Abercwmboi boxer Boyo Rees (Henry George Rees) won the lightweight championship of Wales when he knocked out Ammanford's Billy Quinlan in the 9th round in a fight staged at Mountain Ash Pavilion. Almost a year later on the 14th October 1935 he out pointed Trealaw's Nobby Baker over 15 rounds in his first defence of the title. On the 17th April 1936 he made his second defence of the title when again he met a Trealaw born opponent, namely Ivor Drew. The championship contest took place in Drew's place of birth and went the full 15 rounds to a point's decision in favour of the champion. On the 11th January 1937 Rees lost his title in Swansea when he had to retire in 10 rounds because of a badly cut eye. The Cardiff born lightweight George Reynolds was the new champion and the famous C B Thomas refereed the fight. After defending his newly won title on the 9th of November 1937, at Briton Ferry by stopping Llanelli's Glan Evans in the 9th round, Reynolds gave Rees the opportunity to win back the title he'd taken from him when on the 4th April 1938 they clashed at Mountain Ash Pavilion. Rees regained the title by winning a 15 rounder via a points decision. Less than a year later Boyo Rees Forfeited his title. Boyo Rees born Abercwmboi 1912 died Mountain Ash 1955. Twice Welsh lightweight champion.
